The Public Supports Michael Gove’s Call for Deposits

Following on from our previous issue of Heritage Update (Issue 398), The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) [Alliance member] has recently released the results of their survey on a national deposit return scheme following the former Environment Secretary Michael Gove’s statement supporting an ‘all-in’ system. This system would include all drinks containers of all materials and sizes.

CPRE, welcomed the statement and the survey shows that the general public is supportive, with 72% of respondents supporting the introduction of a UK-wide deposit return scheme. In addition, they called upon the new Environment Secretary, Theresa Villiers, to build upon the work of her predecessor and to turn this idea into a formal commitment from the government, in line with other countries that have already implemented effective return deposit systems such as Norway.
