DCMS Publishes Community Life Survey for 2018-2019

The Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) recently published its Community Life Survey for 2018-19. The nationally representative survey, which is self-completed by adults aged 16 and over, provides key insight on social cohesion, community engagement and social action.

Notably for the heritage sector, the survey revealed that for the year 2018-19:

  • 22% of adults took part in formal volunteering at least once a month (with 36% taking part in formal volunteering at least once in the last year);
  • 75% of adults gave to charitable causes in the last 4 weeks and donated an average of £24 each;
  • 25% of respondents felt able to influence decisions affecting their local area (with 52% wanting to be more involved in local decision making);
  • 62% felt they belonged to their immediate neighbourhood (with 76% stating they were satisfied with their local area as a place to live).
