Detail for Esmee Fairbairn Foundation - Strand Programmes

Geographical Coverage: Available throughout the UK

Esmee Fairbairn Foundation is one of the largest independent grant-making foundations in the UK. Its primary interests are in the cultural life of the UK, education and learning, the natural environment and enabling disadvantaged people to participate more fully in society. It funds the charitable activities of organisations that have the ideas and ability to achieve change for the better, in particular supporting work that might otherwise be considered difficult to fund.

It channels its funding through two routes:

Main Fund: Its Main Fund distributes about two-thirds of its funding, and is responsive to requests for support across the broad range of its interests, which are: the cultural life of the UK; education and learning; the natural environment; and enabling disadvantaged people to participate more fully in society. It prioritises work that:

  • Addresses a significant gap in provision;
  • Develops or strengthens good practice;
  • Challenges convention or takes a risk in order to address a difficult issue;
  • Tests out new ideas or practices;
  • Takes an enterprising approach to achieving its aims;
  • Sets out to influence policy or change behaviour more widely.

Strands: The Foundation also allocates funds to specific strands of work. These change over time, but overall they express the Foundation's desire to make a contribution in particular areas of interest. There are currently three funding strands, one of which is relevant to this Directory:

Museum & Heritage CollectionsThis strand focuses on time-limited collections work including research, documentation and conservation that is outside the scope of an organisation's core resources. It prioritises proposals that are at an early stage of development where it may be difficult to guarantee tangible outcomes. It also prioritises proposals that have the potential to share knowledge with other organisations through partnership working or dissemination.
